Wallingford is a market town steeped in history in order to march to London. It has a medieval bridge and its own castle ruins (Wallingford castle was originally bigger than Windsor castle but was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell because of its potential strategic importance to the Royalists) and it was at Wallingford that William the Conqueror crossed the Thames with his army after winning the Battle of Hastings in order to march to London. Nearby places of interest include the Thames path, the Ridgeway, Oxford and Henley.
There is a regular bus service to Henley (about 15 minutes by car), as well as Oxford and Reading (both about 20 minutes by car). Reading has regular, fast (30 minutes) trains to London. Taxi cabs can be ordered or found in the market square.
